About Nepean/Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group

The principal objective of this association is the promotion of the cause of support for those who have prostate cancer, or suspect that they may have prostate cancer and their carers, to ensure that such people know they are not alone.

We have been in operation for some years now and became an incorporated association in March 2007. We are an approved DGR recipient with the Australian Taxation Office, which means that donations made to our association are tax deductible.

Our group meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at Lecture Room 1, Learning and Development Block, Nepean Public Hospital, Somerset Street, Penrith NSW, starting at 6.30 pm.

Usually, we have a guest speaker, followed by light refreshments; however, although our guest speakers usually speak for only half an hour, the questions and answers generated sometimes go on for longer than the talk.

Partners and carers are especially welcome and laughter and tears usually balance one another out!!

From time to time, we have open sessions, with no guest speaker, where members discuss and raise issues that are of concern or interest to them.

Our two rules are:

  1. everything said in the meeting stays in the meeting
  2. everyone is entitled to their point of view

If you would like to become a member, please contact our Secretary; you do not have to be a member to attend our meetings and no charge is made for attending at any of our meetings.

Thank you for your interest in our group.

Objectives of our prostate cancer support group

What we do

In order to carry out our principal objective, we actively pursue a number of sub-objectives, including:

  1. providing broad based relevant information and facilitating educational exchanges for those undergoing tests to determine the presence of prostate cancer, for those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, for those undergoing treatment for or recovering from treatment for prostate cancer, along with their carers, partners, families and their providers of medical services.
  2. participating in or otherwise supporting research into prostate cancer, disseminating appropriate information on trials and outcomes of such research.
  3. addressing at whatever level possible, the psychosocial needs of people dealing with the impacts of prostate cancer.

Activities

We engage in a variety of activities, which include, but are not limited to:

  1. to provide to all men, their families and carers, with suspected prostate cancer, or faced with the shock of a positive prostate cancer diagnosis, who live in the Blue Mountains and wider Nepean areas, with access to understanding and experience based information, to assist in making sense of professional advice and literature.
  2. to establish such physical, written, visual and virtual electronic / web based services, as will support and enhance this.
  3. specifically, to establish a web site, to provide a twenty four hour a day, seven day a week educational and support resource, to such men, their families and carers, wherever they may be located, particularly for those who cannot participate, for whatever reason, in any virtual or physical meetings of the association.
  4. to assist, by participating in research activities, identification of reasons why prostate cancer develops and in the development of treatments for prostate cancer.
  5. to do all things necessary to give effect to the objectives of the association, as a not-for-profit charitable organisation, dedicated to dealing with the impacts of prostate cancer on men, their families and their carers.
