NBMPCSG GOES DRAGON BOATING

On October 25th, a group of our members took part in a Dragon Boat festival at the invitation of Dragons Abreast Australia. This was held at Darling Harbour.
Last year, one of our members, Brett Sowerby, participated in the 2008 festival and was part of a half crew of 10 prostate cancer survivors who paddled with 10 pink ladies. A good time was had by all.
This year a concerted effort was made to enter a full boat crew of 20 prostate cancer survivors.
Our own support group provided 9 paddlers and with some Sydney based paddlers from last year’s crew and a few “ring ins” from lower BM Rotary, we took part with a full boat crew. Thanks to all for being part of this awareness raising day.
The crew had 2 races and won them both by a good margin. Unfortunately shocking weather caused the day to be cancelled about 1 pm, when we still had one race to go.
However, all had a great time and from the reaction of the other paddlers (there were 72 crews entered) we created a lot of interest and encouragement.
Well done lads! We intend to get more on board for next year, so be in it!

We were ably assisted by Ian and Joan Davis, who came down to be our land crew, and what a great job they did. Thanks Ian and Joan.
Thanks are also due to Pendragons for their support with training and especially to Gerry Ebelt who did such fabulous job in coaching us to take part. Also, a special thanks also to Norbert Gaulton who came all the way down from Brisbane again, to be our coach and sweep on the race day. He was a great inspiration to us.

With special thanks

We also thank Dragons Abreast Australia and especially Cynthia Kuiper, for encouraging our efforts to get a full crew of PC supporters.
Our NBMPCSG crew consisted of Garry Clear, Ted Hobson, Alan Howard, Darrien Howard, Mark Cipants, Raphael Collins, Bob Wittrien, Dr. Celi Varol, who we can count as one of us, and Brett Sowerby.
